Additional information

Adud al-Dawla, the Buyid amir who effectively controlled the Abbasid caliph in Baghdad by 977, operated Shiraz as his administrative capital and primary mint. His dirhams reflect the dynasty's careful political theater: acknowledging Abbasid legitimacy in the coin's religious formula while making clear where actual power resided. The Buyids were Shia ruling over a Sunni caliphate, and the mint output from Shiraz documents that tension in metal across three decades.
