| Reverse description | The reverse is likewise entirely epigraphic in the Umayyad Kufic tradition. The central field contains four lines of Kufic Arabic script bearing the Quranic verse of Ikhlas (Surah 112): 'Allah the one, Allah the eternal absolute, He was neither born nor was He begotten, and there is nothing like unto Him.' The marginal legend, enclosed within a beaded border, carries the Quranic verse from Surah 9:33 attesting to the prophethood of Muhammad. The coin exhibits the flat, aniconic aesthetic characteristic of all Umayyad-derived Andalusian silver coinage, with no figurative imagery or decorative motifs. |
