Mytilene, the dominant polis of Lesbos, operated one of the more unusual monetary systems in the eastern Aegean — issuing the majority of its coinage in electrum rather than silver. The silver diobols represent a parallel, smaller-denomination production, likely intended for local retail transactions where electrum fractions were too high in intrinsic value to be practical for everyday exchange.
The HGC 6 classification places this among a tightly grouped series minted across the fourth century, though precise die studies have not yet established a reliable internal chronology.
