| Obverse description | Facing head of a lion rendered in archaic Greek style, depicted full-face with a broad, flattened muzzle, prominent open jaws, and deeply modeled facial features. The mane is rendered as a radiating array of bold, upswept flame-like strands framing the head on all sides, with individual locks clearly delineated. The eyes are set wide and deeply recessed, giving the visage a fierce, frontal intensity characteristic of early Pontic coinage. The design fills the flan almost entirely, with no legend or inscription present in the field. The style reflects the accomplished archaic engraving tradition of Pantikapaion in the mid-fifth century BC. |
