Obverse description Facing lion's head rendered in high relief, depicted full-face with an elaborately striated mane radiating outward from the central visage. The powerful musculature of the muzzle is well articulated, with the lower jaw open and prominent, and the curved ears visible at either side. The bold, naturalistic style is characteristic of early Pontic Greek coinage from Pantikapaion, with the leonine type serving as the principal civic emblem of the city. No legend or inscription appears on the obverse field.
