| Reverse description | A plain cross divides the field into four quadrants, with two six-pointed stars and two pointed decorative elements (poinçons) placed alternately in the angles of the cross, a characteristic motif of Sancho II dinheiros. The circumferential legend PO RT VG AL, an early abbreviated form of PORTVGAL, is distributed in four groups around the border, separated by the cross arms. The overall design is executed in the rudimentary hammered style of medieval Portuguese billon coinage, with an irregular flan and uneven strike. |
