Reverse description The reverse displays the Portuguese royal arms arranged in a cross pattern: five escutcheons each bearing five bezants (quinas) are disposed in the form of a cross, with the central escutcheon flanked by the four outer shields. The composition reflects the traditional heraldic device of the House of Burgundy as used on coinage of Dinis I. The surrounding legend in uncial Latin reads AL GA RB II, a continuation of the royal title PORTV GAL GARB II (Algarve), completing the obverse inscription. The flan is irregular and the relief uneven, consistent with hand-hammered medieval minting practice.
