Obverse description Central field bearing a stylized royal castle or tower motif within a beaded inner circle, characteristic of medieval Iberian hammered coinage. The surrounding legend, struck in uncial Latin characters, reads ALF REX PORTVGL, identifying the issuer as Alfonso (Afonso IV), King of Portugal. The lettering is distributed around the periphery between the inner beaded border and the outer rim. The striking is irregular, as typical of hand-hammered medieval billon coinage, with some weakness in the legend due to flan irregularities.
