The legend PORTVGAL is distributed across the four quadrants separated by the arms of the cross, reading PO RT VG AL. The flan is irregular and the strike is uneven, as is characteristic of hand-hammered medieval billon coinage. The cross serves both as a religious symbol and a structural device organizing the reverse composition.
