Urraca's reign began in crisis: her father Alfonso VI died in 1109 leaving her the sole legitimate heir, making her the first ruling queen of León and Castile. Her ex-husband Alfonso I of Aragon — whom she had divorced but remained politically entangled with — contested her authority almost immediately, and the coinage issued under her name was produced against a backdrop of near-continuous civil war.
