Obverse description Central field features a stylized Gothic castle with three towers, the central tower taller and crenellated, set within a beaded inner circle. The castle displays an arched gateway at its base, rendered in the bold, somewhat crude style characteristic of Alfonsine billon coinage. The surrounding legend reads ALF REX CASTELLE, identifying Alfonso X as King of Castile, separated by small decorative crosses or stops. The design is enclosed within a beaded outer border, with the irregular flan edge typical of hammered medieval coinage.
