Obverse lettering IOHANES REX CASTELLE
(Translation: Juan II King of Castile)
Reverse description Central field features a rampant lion to the left, rendered in the bold, schematic Gothic style characteristic of medieval Leonese heraldry, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The lion is depicted with a raised forepaw and open mouth, representing the traditional arms of the Kingdom of Leon. The surrounding circular Latin legend IOHANES REX LEGION runs along the outer periphery of the coin. The irregular flan and flat striking are consistent with hammered billon coinage of the reign of Juan II.
