Ausona — the Latin name for Vic, in what is now Catalonia — operated under the authority of the counts of Osona during the early eleventh century, a period when Carolingian monetary structures were fragmenting and local lords across the Iberian march were asserting independent minting rights. The coins produced here circulated primarily within the Ripollès and Plana de Vic regions, filling a practical gap left by the collapse of centralized Frankish supply.
Crusafont's cataloguing of this type as Cru#37 places it among the earliest documented autonomous Catalan issues.
