Alfonso X ordered this issue specifically to fund the Mudéjar revolt of 1264–1268, a coordinated uprising across Andalusia and Murcia backed directly by the Nasrid ruler Muhammad I of Granada. The campaign nearly unraveled Alfonso's southern territories and forced him to call on his father-in-law, James I of Aragon, for military relief. Emergency billon issues of this type were struck with minimal silver content to stretch the royal treasury under sustained military pressure.
