Obverse description Crude facing bust of King Alfonso VIII occupying the central field, depicted with stylized curly hair beneath a crown rendered in a simple architectural form. The effigy is shown in a schematic, Romanesque manner characteristic of 12th-century Castilian coinage. The bust is facing forward with visible drapery at the shoulders. The surrounding circular legend reads ANFVS REX, identifying the issuer as Alfonso, King of Castile. The overall relief is low and the flan is irregular, consistent with hammered medieval billon coinage.
