Alfonso VII was crowned Emperor of All Spain in Toledo in 1135 — one of the most politically charged acts of the Reconquista period — and the dineros struck in Toledo during his reign reflect the city's symbolic weight as the former Visigothic capital, recovered from Muslim rule only in 1085. Billon coinage from this reign is poorly documented in terms of exact mint chronology, and AB#49 represents one of the earlier attributions in the series.
