Alfonso VII was crowned "Imperator totius Hispaniae" in León in 1135, the same year this coinage begins — the only Iberian ruler to claim that imperial title in the medieval period. The designation was less fantasy than political calculation, reflecting genuine tributary relationships with the kings of Navarre, Aragon, and Portugal. Billon issues of his reign circulated widely across the patchwork of kingdoms his coronation briefly unified, though his empire dissolved immediately upon his death in 1157 when Castile and León were partitioned between his two sons.
