In the upper-left and lower-right quarters appear a castle with towers, the arms of Castile, while the upper-right and lower-left quarters display a rampant lion passant, the arms of León. The alternating heraldic devices of castles and lions are rendered in a stylised, low-relief manner characteristic of Alfonsine billon coinage. The beaded border frames the entire composition. |

Alfonso X struck this dinero to fund what Castilian chronicles call the "Guerra de Granada" — the Mudéjar revolt of 1264–1266, when the Muslim populations of Murcia and Andalusia rose simultaneously, almost certainly coordinated with Muhammad I of Granada. The revolt reversed much of what Alfonso had consolidated after Fernando III's conquests, and the financial strain forced rapid, high-volume billon production from multiple mints. Pieces from this issue routinely show die misalignment and uneven flan preparation — not incidental, but a direct consequence of wartime minting pressure.
