Obverse description The obverse bears the royal legend ALFONSVS REX CASTELLE ET LEGIONIS arranged in multiple lines across the field, filling the entire face of the coin in a characteristic Castilian Gothic script. The inscription, identifying Alfonso X as King of Castile and Leon, is presented without a central device, the lettering itself constituting the primary design element. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the periphery, consistent with hand-hammered billon coinage of 13th-century Iberia. The surface shows typical medieval die-cutting with bold, deeply incuse letterforms. No border or inner circle is discernible.
