Alfonso X ordered this emergency coinage during the Mudéjar revolt of 1264–1268, a coordinated uprising backed by the Nasrid ruler Muhammad I of Granada that simultaneously engulfed Murcia and Andalusia. The crisis forced Alfonso to call on his father-in-law, James I of Aragon, for military assistance — a rare admission of overextension for a king who was simultaneously campaigning for the Holy Roman Imperial crown.
The Córdoba attribution reflects the city's role as a primary administrative and minting center in the reconquered south. Billon of this weight and period circulated hard and survived poorly.
