| Obverse description | Right-facing draped bust of Shapur I wearing the distinctive Sasanian royal mural crown surmounted by a large globular korymbos (hair ball) encased in a crenellated diadem, with a crescent lunate device at the crown's front. The king's beard is rendered in the characteristic Sasanian style with individual curled locks depicted as pellets, and ribbons from the crown trail behind the effigy. The bust is draped in royal court costume with a beaded torque visible at the neck. The entire effigy is enclosed within a beaded border, with a circular Pahlavi legend running around the periphery of the field reading the royal titulature of the Mazda-worshipping lord Shapur, King of Kings of Iran, whose lineage is from the gods. |
