| Obverse description | The obverse field is occupied by a multi-line Arabic Kufic legend arranged in horizontal registers within a plain inner circle. The central inscription contains the Shahada and the honorific titles and name of the Ghaznavid governor Sebuktekin (Nasir al-Din wa al-Dawla Sabuktigin), along with the mint and date formula recording the striking of this dinar in the city of Herat in the year 385 AH. A continuous marginal legend in Arabic script runs around the inner border, separated from the central field by a linear circle, with a further outer marginal band completing the design. The entire composition is executed in the aniconic, epigraphic tradition characteristic of Islamic gold coinage of the late 4th century AH. |
