Reverse description The reverse displays five horizontal lines of Arabic thuluth script arranged across the central field, containing the Islamic profession of faith (Shahada) and Quranic verse (Quran 9:33), followed by the mint and date formula. The text reads: La ilaha illa Allah / Muhammad rasul Allah / arsalahu bi-al-huda wa din al-haqq / li-yuzh-hirahu ala al-din kullihi / duriba bi-al-Qahira sana thaman wa sab mi'a, recording the Cairo mint and the Hijri year 708 (1308 CE). The inscription is struck in bold relief on a plain flan, enclosed within a raised circular border. The style and layout conform closely to standard Mamluk dinar typology of the period.

Additional information

Baybars II ruled for less than a year — from April to June 1309, depending on the source — before being deposed and executed by the restored Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun, who had himself been overthrown to make way for Baybars in the first place. The brevity of that reign makes any gold issue attributable to his Cairo mint exceptionally scarce by simple arithmetic of production time.
