Dušan struck these dinars following his self-coronation as "Emperor of the Serbs and Greeks" at Skopje in April 1346, an act that required him to elevate the Serbian archbishop to patriarch simultaneously — both moves calculated to legitimize a title that Byzantium refused to recognize until his death. The coinage reflects a ruler actively constructing imperial authority from scratch, minting in the established Venetian grosso tradition while asserting something entirely new politically.
