Stefan Lazarević received the title of despot from the Byzantine Emperor Manuel II in 1402, immediately following the Battle of Ankara where Timur's defeat of the Ottomans temporarily relieved Serbian tributary pressure. The coinage issued under this title marks a distinct break from his earlier issues as a simple knez — the rank itself carried Byzantine ceremonial weight, and the monetary series reflects that shift in status.
Jovanović's typology for Stefan's dinars remains the primary reference, as no KM attribution has been firmly established for most medieval Serbian issues.
