Obverse description Facing bust of the young king Ardashir III, wearing a cap surmounted by a crenelated mural crown with a globe and crescent above a pair of wings. The royal hair is arranged in two korymboi over crescents above the shoulders, and the king wears elaborate oval pendant earrings, richly decorated ceremonial garments, and a double beaded pendant necklace with a central circular jewel from which three matching oval drops are suspended. A Pahlavi legend appears in the upper field, reading right to left: 'artashtr apzwn' (Ardashir, ever-increasing in glory).
