Ardashir II ruled for just four years before being deposed by the nobility — ancient sources suggest he was forcibly removed and blinded, the standard Sasanian method of disqualification from kingship without outright execution. His coinage is correspondingly scarce, and gold issues in particular survive in small numbers relative to the longer reigns bracketing his.
The Göbl I/3 classification places this among the earliest die groupings of his reign, distinguished by subtle reverse field details that shift across the emission sequence.
