| Obverse description | Entirely epigraphic design with no figurative imagery, characteristic of the reformed Umayyad coinage established by Caliph Abd al-Malik. The central field displays three horizontal lines of bold Kufic Arabic script bearing the Shahada: 'There is no God except Allah, He is the only one, He has no equal.' A circular marginal legend in Kufic script runs along the inner edge of the coin, reading: 'Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, the guide and the true religion, for his generation.' The flat, unadorned field and the precise calligraphic execution reflect the austere theological aesthetic of Umayyad gold coinage. |
