Obverse description The obverse presents the characteristic aniconic design of Umayyad Andalusian coinage, composed entirely of Arabic Kufic script arranged in horizontal lines within a central circular field. The inner legend occupies three or four lines and contains the shahada and mint/date formula. A thin inner circle separates the central field from the marginal legend, which runs continuously around the circumference and contains the Quranic basmala and striking information including the mint of al-Andalus and the Hijri year. The whole composition is framed by a plain outer border, typical of gold dinars struck at Madinat al-Zahra under the Umayyad caliphs.
