Obverse description In the lower portion of the field, a lion passant to the left, depicted in a stylized heraldic manner, serving as the royal emblem (rank badge) of Sultan al-Ẓāhir Baybars I. Above and surrounding the lion, four lines of bold Arabic Kufic-style legends fill the central field within a circular border, citing the sultan's titles and honorifics. The overall composition is characteristic of Mamluk hammered gold coinage, with the script occupying the dominant portion of the die area.
