| Obverse description | Central field displays the Islamic profession of faith (shahada) in multiple horizontal lines of Kufic script: 'There is no god but God alone, He has no partner.' A subsidiary legend in the inner margin names the Abbasid caliph al-Mu'tamid, while the outer marginal legend contains the Quranic verse (Quran 9:33) attesting to the mission of the Prophet, all rendered in angular Kufic script. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, characteristic of hand-struck Abbasid-style gold coinage of the period. |
