Ahmad II al-Mansur's reign saw the Saadian Sultanate at its territorial peak, culminating in the 1591 conquest of the Songhay Empire and sudden control over the trans-Saharan gold trade. The Baldat al-Kitaoua mint — likely operating in the Draa Valley region — issued dinars drawing on that influx of sub-Saharan gold, a resource that briefly made the Saadians one of the wealthiest dynasties in the Islamic world.
Al-Mansur died in 1603 during a plague outbreak, and the sultanate immediately fractured among his sons. Coins from the final years of his reign are consequently difficult to attribute cleanly to a single administrative moment.
