Obverse description The obverse displays an elaborate multi-line Arabic religious and titular inscription arranged within a plain square cartouche set against a flat gold field. The central legend reads the Shahada followed by the name and title of the sultan, Abu'l-Abbas Ahmad, Amir al-Mu'minin. A continuous marginal legend running along all four sides of the coin carries the Basmala and Salawat formula. The die was hand-engraved in a bold Maghribi script characteristic of late Saadian coinage, with shallow relief typical of the hammered technique. The flan is irregular, with slight weakness at the margins consistent with hand-struck production.
