Obverse description Laureate head of Poseidon facing left, rendered in high relief with finely detailed flowing locks of hair and a full beard, characteristic of the mature Sicilian Greek engraving tradition. The god's wreath of laurel or seaweed is rendered with naturalistic precision. A partial inscription appears in the field to the left, reading [ΠOΣ]EIΔAN, identifying the deity. The portrait occupies nearly the entire flan, with minimal field visible around the periphery.

Reverse description A trident, the emblematic weapon of Poseidon, is depicted upright at center, its shaft terminating in a decorative foliate or volute base. Two dolphins are arranged symmetrically flanking the trident, their bodies curving gracefully around it to form a balanced heraldic composition. The circular legend MEΣΣANIΩN, identifying the issuing city of Messana, runs around the periphery of the flan. The design is bold and well-centered, consistent with Sicilian bronze coinage of the late fourth century BC.
