Reverse description A trident, the emblematic weapon of Poseidon, is depicted upright at center, its shaft terminating in a decorative foliate or volute base. Two dolphins are arranged symmetrically flanking the trident, their bodies curving gracefully around it to form a balanced heraldic composition. The circular legend MEΣΣANIΩN, identifying the issuing city of Messana, runs around the periphery of the flan. The design is bold and well-centered, consistent with Sicilian bronze coinage of the late fourth century BC.
