Reverse description Central device depicting a silphium plant in full frontal view, its tall central stalk surmounted by a rounded umbel head, with lateral branches bearing additional flower buds and seed pods spreading outward in a symmetrical composition. The silphium, the prized medicinal and culinary plant emblematic of Cyrene, rises from a broad basal stem with curling root-like forms at the bottom of the flan. A six-petalled star or rosette appears to the right of the upper stalk. The Greek letters KYPA are disposed in the four quadrants of the field around the plant — Κ upper left, Υ lower left, Ρ lower right, Α upper right — serving as the civic ethnic abbreviation for Kyrene.
