After the dissolution of the Epirote League by Rome in 167 BC, several Akarnanian cities began issuing coins in the name of Lysimachus — the long-dead Thracian king — as a way of participating in the widely accepted "Lysimachi" coinage that had circulated throughout the Aegean since the early third century. The practice was purely commercial: these posthumous issues traded on the established weight standard and market recognition of the original Lysimachian series, not on any political claim to his memory.
Leukas, positioned on the promontory between the Ionian Sea and the Ambracian Gulf, was well-placed for Adriatic trade. The city identifier distinguishes these pieces from the broader posthumous Lysimachi output.
