The letter Φ appears as a control mark above the lion in the upper field, while Θ or XΛ is placed below the body. In the exergue, the ethnic legend YEΛHTΩN — 'of the Velians' — is inscribed in clear Greek characters, identifying the issuing city. The composition reflects the strong Phocaean artistic tradition maintained at Velia throughout the fourth century BC. |
