Erythrai was one of the twelve cities of the Ionian League, situated on the Çeşme Peninsula opposite Chios. This didrachm falls squarely within the period of Ionian recovery following the catastrophic failure of the Ionian Revolt — the Persian sack of nearby Miletos in 494 BC effectively ended coordinated resistance, and cities like Erythrai were left to negotiate their place under Achaemenid authority. That coinage continued at all during these decades reflects the pragmatic tolerance Persian satraps extended to local civic minting, provided tribute obligations were met.
The Chian weight standard used here links Erythrai commercially to its island neighbor across the strait.
