| Reverse description | Quadripartite incuse square of mill-sail type, divided into four rectangular compartments by raised ridges meeting at the center, with alternating raised and sunken sections creating a distinctive geometric pattern. A small pellet or raised boss is visible in one of the compartments. The incuse technique is characteristic of early Greek coinage of the Thraco-Macedonian region, circa 500–470 BC. |

| Additional information |
Sermyle was a small Chalkidian colony on the Sithonian peninsula of Macedon, and its coinage is among the rarest produced by any of the region's minor mints. The city appears in Thucydides in connection with the Athenian campaigns of the Thraceward region, and was at various points subject to tribute obligations to the Delian League — which makes the existence of an independent civic coinage all the more telling about the actual degree of local autonomy these communities exercised in the early fifth century.
Only a handful of specimens are recorded; the Jameson and ANS references between them account for two of the best-documented examples.
