Reverse description A crab rendered in high relief and seen from above, displayed in full frontal view with all legs extended symmetrically and the two claws raised at the upper field. The carapace is carefully detailed with rounded lobes and articulated limbs, reflecting the accomplished die-cutting of early Sicilian workshops. The incuse technique employed on this type creates a recessed field around the raised crab design, a hallmark of early Magna Graecian and Sicilian coinage influenced by Pythagorean principles. No legend appears on the reverse. The crab was the principal heraldic emblem of Akragas, alluding to the city's maritime identity on the southern coast of Sicily.
