Reverse description A powerful lion strides to the right in high relief, its mane rendered with exceptional detail and its tail curling upward over its back, all set within a linear border. The letter Epsilon (Ε) appears as a control mark in the upper field above the animal. In the exergue below, the ethnic legend ΥΕΛΗΤΩΝ is inscribed in Greek characters, identifying the issuing city of Velia (Hyele), with the additional control letters Ε and Θ flanking the type. The lion type is characteristic of Velian coinage and reflects strong artistic influence from the Phocaean tradition.
