The musculature of the body is modeled with exceptional plasticity, conveying strength and tension. The ethnic legend YEΛHTΩN appears in the upper field above the lion, identifying the coin as an issue of the Yelates (citizens of Velia/Hyele). An erased letter is visible in the lower field beneath the ground line. The overall composition is bold and characteristic of the finest Lucanian coinage of the early third century BC. |
