Obverse description Central field displays the rampant bear of St. Gallen, facing left with open jaws and wearing a collar, set within a rope-edged inner circle. The bear, the heraldic symbol of the city, is rendered in bold relief with careful attention to fur texture and musculature. The date 1621 appears in the upper portion of the surrounding legend. The circumferential Latin inscription reads MO:NO.CIV:SANGALLENSIS, identifying this as a coin of the city of St. Gallen. The outer border is composed of fine toothed dentilation.
