Solothurn occupied an anomalous position among the Swiss Confederate cities — a staunchly Catholic enclave that had served as the seat of the French ambassador since 1530, a diplomatic arrangement that brought both prestige and a steady influx of French silver into cantonal coffers. The city's right to strike its own coinage was fiercely defended, and the Dicken series reflects that civic pride in monetary independence.
The 1642 issue falls squarely within the Thirty Years' War period, when disrupted trade routes and currency debasement across the Holy Roman Empire made Swiss cantonal coinage — generally held to honest weight standards — considerably more trusted than much of what circulated beyond the Confederation's borders.
