Basel's civic coinage of the early seventeenth century was struck against a backdrop of mounting pressure from the Thirty Years' War, which broke out in 1618 and immediately disrupted trade networks along the Rhine. The city jealously guarded its minting rights as an independent imperial city, and issues like this Dicken were as much political declarations of autonomy as they were instruments of commerce.
