| Obverse description | Bare head of the hero Perseus in right profile, wearing the iconic winged Phrygian helmet characteristic of his mythological iconography. The harpa, the curved sword used to slay Medusa, is depicted over his right shoulder. The portrait is rendered in the vigorous Hellenistic style typical of late Macedonian royal bronze coinage, with bold facial features and expressive detailing on the helmet's wing. |

Issued under Perseus, the last Macedonian king, these bronzes were struck during a reign defined by his ultimately failed attempt to resist Roman expansion in Greece. The Third Macedonian War ended at Pydna in 168 BC, where Lucius Aemilius Paullus destroyed the Macedonian phalanx in under an hour. Perseus fled, surrendered shortly after, and was paraded through Rome in Paullus's triumph before dying in captivity at Alba Fucens around 166 BC. The kingdom was dissolved and partitioned into four client republics — no Macedonian royal coinage would follow.
