Abdera, the Thracian coastal colony founded originally by Clazomenians and later re-established by Teos around 545 BC, maintained a surprisingly robust civic coinage well into the Hellenistic period despite chronic political instability in the region. By the early third century, Macedonian hegemony over Thrace had loosened considerably following the fragmentation after Alexander's death, allowing cities like Abdera a degree of autonomous bronze production for local exchange.
The magistrate name Euan- preserved in the coin's designation represents a partial reading — the full name likely Euandros or a close variant — a naming convention that links this piece to a specific annual magistracy rather than a mint workshop.
