Antiochos VIII Grypos spent much of his reign in open civil war against his half-brother Antiochos IX Kyzikenos, a conflict that fractured the Seleucid realm and left multiple mints operating intermittently under contested authority. This bronze issue falls within the early phase of that struggle, before the fighting had fully destabilized Antioch's mint output.
