Achaios was a Seleucid general who governed Asia Minor on behalf of Antiochus III before declaring himself king around 220 BC — a usurpation that triggered a prolonged conflict ending with his capture at Sardis in 213 BC. Antiochus had him executed by mutilation, a deliberate humiliation reserved for traitors to the dynasty. Coins struck in Achaios's name during this brief rebellion are among the few bronzes from any Seleucid breakaway ruler to survive in meaningful numbers, almost certainly because Sardis remained a productive mint throughout the conflict.
